The network's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
