The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Fatal Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
