RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
